The Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development in Agriculture (IEDA), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) was established in 2002, and its predecessors were the Agro-meteorological Research Group of the North China Agricultural Research Institute founded in 1953 and the CAAS Institute of Biological Control founded in 1980. Over the past 70 years since its establishment, IEDA has developed five disciplinary fields, including Agro-meteorology, Agricultural Water Resources and Water Environment, Agro-biological Environmental Engineering, Agricultural Ecology, and Agricultural Materials Engineering, based on Agro-meteorology, through generations of disciplinary integration, inheritance and innovation across the centuries. As the key disciplines are already internationally competitive, IEDA has become a public research institution with significant influence at home and abroad.
IEDA stays committed to growing stronger through human resource development. We have built 11 research teams by virtue of our science and technology innovation program. We have stepped up our efforts to introduce and cultivate young and middle-aged high-level talents. By the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan period, IEDA had 188 active staff members, of whom 60% had an associate senior title or above, 23 post-doctoral students and 224 master and doctoral students.
IEDA stays committed to seeking development through science and technology. We devote ourselves to applied and basic research, breakthroughs in key technologies, integration model innovation, and research and development of products and equipment, based on the "Four Facings" (i.e., facing the frontiers of world science and technology, facing the main economic battlefield, facing major national needs, and facing people's lives and health), in light of China's major strategic needs and challenges posed by issues relating to agriculture, rural areas and farmers, and focusing on key and priority areas. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, we won three second prizes of the National Award for Science and Technology Progress as the first author affiliation. We have sent experts to, provided advice on and delivered technologies to the tasks of ministries, such as UN climate change negotiations, national censuses of pollution sources, carbon peaking and carbon neutrality in agriculture and rural areas, rural toilet renovation, and poverty alleviation through science and technology in the "Three Areas and Three Prefectures", making our role as a national think tank increasingly prominent. Through cooperation with local governments and enterprises, we have facilitated the promotion and application of a wide range of advanced and applicable technologies across the country, highlighting our leading role in providing science and technology support.
IEDA has been firmly advancing the development of four scientific and technological infrastructure systems, including scientific research, technological innovation, basic support and international cooperation. We have built two national platforms, such as the State Engineering Laboratory of Efficient Water Use of Crops and Disaster Mitigation and Disaster Mitigation and the National Field Scientific Observation and Research Station for Dryland Agroecosystem (Shouyang, Shanxi), seven ministerial research platforms such as the Key Laboratory of Agricultural and Rural Ecological Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA), four national agro-environmental data centers (where IEDA plays a leading role), three CAAS-level platforms such as the CAAS Center for Carbon Emission Peak and Neutrality in Agriculture and Rural Region, and 12 international cooperation platforms such as China-Japan Research and Development Center for Agricultural Technology.
