The Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development in Agriculture (IEDA) directly affiliated to the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) is a national non-profit research institute specializing in scientific discovery and technological innovation in agro-environment, with its office located at No.12, Zhongguancun South Street, Haidian District, Beijing. As early as 1953, the Research Group on Agricultural Meteorology was jointly set up by the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the North China Institute of Agricultural Sciences according to the instruction of Premier Zhou Enlai, to conduct research on mitigating the impact of meteorological disasters on agricultural production and give scientific and technological support for addressing the problem of subsistence. In 1957, the Research Laboratory on Agricultural Meteorology was created as one of the earliest specialized institutes (laboratories) directly under CAAS. It was renamed the Institute of Agricultural Meteorology in 1990 and merged with the Institute of Biological Control in 2002 to form IEDA known today. IEDA has been committed to "strengthening the basic research and original technological innovation on green and low-carbon agriculture, improving the scientific and technological capacity of supporting the ecological environment for agriculture and rural areas while leaping to the international forefront of agro-environmental science and technology, and serving China's rural ecological revitalization". It focuses research on agro-environmental elements that affect and restrict the development of modern agriculture, such as light, temperature, water, soil, air and biomass, and their spatial and temporal evolution patterns and impacts on agricultural production. Relying on the unremitting efforts of several generations, IEDA has developed agro-environmental theories and methods and introduced innovative agro-environmental technologies and processes to promote green, low-carbon and high-quality agricultural development that underpins national food security, ecological security and rural revitalization.
